Lake
Nyasa, also known as Lake Malawi, is the third largest lake in Africa.
It is 706 meters deep and is located at
an altitude of 472 meters above sea level. Its waters teem
with more fish species than any other lake on Earth, among
them, 843 species of cichlids; several species are vulnerable and many are listed as endangered or critically endangered in the
IUCN Red List
of Threatened Species. Diving in Nkhata Bay is very nice,
as most fish are endemic to
Lake Malawi and we can see a lot more underwater life
than in Lake Tanganyika, in Burundi. Colorful cichlids are everywhere in
Nyasa, tilapia and freshwater angelfish, mouthbrooders,
kampangos (
Bagrus
meridionalis) and other catfish, dolphin fish
and crabs. Although there is
a high risk of contracting bilharzia (Schistosomiasis) in the lake,
chances of an encounter with a hippo or a crocodile are very slim.
