This criminal practice
can be extremely destructive to the surrounding ecosystem, as the
explosion indiscriminately kill large numbers of fish and other marine
organisms in the vicinity, and destroys the
underlying habitat such as coral reefs that
supports the fish.
The improvised nature of the explosives used also means serious danger
for the fishermen and anyone swimming within a radius of a few
hundred meters, with accidents and fatalities. The underwater
shock waves produced by the explosion cause the fish's swim bladder to
rupture, killing them. It can also destroy the physical environment,
including extensive damage to coral reefs and to man-made structures in
the vicinity.
Dynamite fishing has been taking place very often at the same
spots in Salvador, Brazil, for
many years; as usual, complaints, protests and even
newspaper articles are simply ignored by the
police, the Coast Guard, and by IBAMA, which is supposed to
oversee all environmental issues in Brazil. Fancy coming for the 2014
FIFA World Cup? Or perhaps coming
for the 2016 Olympic Games? Brazil will host them both. However, think
twice and don't risk
your life... there are better and much safer places to
visit, other than a country where there is an average of nearly 200
homicides
per day (more than the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan together).

A powerful bomb exploded today at 8:50 a.m. The criminals seem surprised to find so few fish. Is there anything left of what once was a coral reef?

23 July 2010
Today the same criminals arrived at 10:26 a.m. Again, neither IBAMA,
the Coast Guard (their headquarters is located only two miles from the crime
scene), nor the police ever appeared, as they are probably continuing
their "investigation".
22 July 2010
There was another explosion today at 9:27 a.m. at the same
place. The criminal in the water collected all the fish that he could,
which was not much, and at 9:40 a.m. headed back to Avenida do
Contorno. I didn't bother calling the police once again, for obvious
reasons. This is a good opportunity for the few local dive shops and
the 410 members of a local scuba divers' internet forum to take some
action. I have done my part already.
21 July 2010
The explosion of yet
another bomb occurred today at 9:24 a.m. at the same spot as the one of
four days ago, and by the same two criminals who were wearing the same
clothes, plus a third one in yellow bermuda shorts who I hadn't seen
before. After taking a few photos, we (at 9:27 a.m.)
immediately called the police, already knowing that it
would be a waste of our valuable time. This time we called COPPA
(Companhia de Policia de Protecao Ambiental), which claims to be the
State Environmental Protection Police. We spoke to Sergeant
#1, who made me wait for seven minutes before transferring
the call to Captain #2, who in turn told me to call the mobile
phone of Lieutenant #3, who according to him, was aboard the COPPA
boat in the vicinity.
However, the lieutenant never answered the phone after four attempts of
mine within ten minutes. I called Captain #2 again
at 9:50 a.m. but now he was "in a meeting", and I was told to call
another number. I
did as instructed, and soldier #4 told me that Lieutenant #2,
the one who was supposed to be on the boat, was actually buying a
spare part for a car somewhere in town; and then the soldier asked me
to call a fifth phone number. At the new
telephone number, and with infinite patience, I spoke with Soldier
#5, who told me that I
should talk to Lieutenant #6. The lieutenant said that he would write
down my details and the three criminals' details, and said that he
would take care of the arrests immediately. It was 10:10 a.m. and I had
just wasted 46 minutes of my time. Until the
time I left for lunch (1:30 p.m.) four hours after my ordeal had began,
not to my surprise, nobody had appeared at the scene. Did any of you
expect anything different?

A few seconds after the explosion occurred, the
waves can still be seen at the top right of the photo

We had not seen this one before
17 July 2010
The explosion of a bomb
occurred today at 11:40 a.m. in the
waters of an upper class neighborhood in Salvador, Brazil.
After taking more than 130 photos from a distance of over 200 meters,
we called the police (Central de Operações do GRAER) at
11:56 a.m. and filed charges with the Sergeant in charge. After
picking up literally hundreds of fish, the two criminals left
the scene at 12:07 p.m. and got back to a slum
nearby, where they arrived at 12:50 p.m.
The police helicopter never showed up as promised, neither did their
boat, nor any of their cars; we gave up waiting at 2:40 p.m.

The white spots on the left half of the photo are only part of the
hundreds of fish that surfaced after the blast. Surprisingly,
this is only part of the small percentage of fish that float to
the surface, as most fish sink to the sea floor.

An enormous quantity of fish measuring between 20 and 30 cm
is being collected from the sea floor and dropped inside the
boat.
This picture
isn't very sharp because we were photographing from over 200 meters
away.

Another load of fish is being thrown into the boat
(basket on the right side of the photo)

The bow and stern of the boat are loaded with fish collected after the
blast
