Bahamas

Columbus first landed on the Bahamian Island of San Salvador on October 12, 1491. Later came Ponce De Leon, and then came the pirates... The Bahamas are 700 islands and 2,400 cays starting 80 Km to the Florida coast and swooping southeast for almost 1,000 Km towards Haiti and Cuba. It is usually considered to consist of three elements: New Providence (capital Nassau), Grand Bahama (capital Freeport) and the Family Islands (all the other islands). The water here is so clear that you hardly need a snorkel mask to enjoy the astonishing array of marine life at countless coral reefs.
